True Colors: Developing your Personal Palette plus Exploring Neutral Territory, Thickened Dyes & Layering

Carol Soderlund | August 13-18, 2012

SUPPLY LIST (Please label your own supplies)

Fabric: Bring your choice of pfd (prepared for dyeing) cotton minimum 8 yards. If you would like to dye larger pieces, bring additional cotton or your choice of pre-scoured silk, linen, or rayon.

• Collections of color: Begin to collect bits of color that you like, to which you respond strongly. Ads, photos taken by you or others, favorite paintings, calendars, paint chips, fabric swatches, colors singly and in striking combinations. Collect in a file folder, in page protectors, or a manila envelope. Loose clippings are just fine, as it will be useful to be able to arrange and re-arrange them. This will be very valuable in class.

• General supplies:
Two dropcloths: For placing under print work, please bring dropcloths that are sturdy, such as cotton twill or denim. Please pre-wash and shrink your dropcloths to size; the largest tables measure 9’ x 4’ so if you allow for this size, you’ll be fine.
• Rubber gloves, both heavier dishwashing kind, and the thin kind, such as you would find at a pharmacy
• For those who plan to do discharge work: a half-mask respirator fitted with an acid-gas cartridge. Discharge work will take place outside.
• A box of ball-headed or T pins
• Rotary mat 12” x 12” or larger, rotary cutter, and rotary ruler around 6”x12”
• Black Sharpie
• Stapler
• Masking tape
• Double stick tape (Scotch Doubled-Sided Tape in yellow plaid dispenser)
• 20+ clear sheet protectors
• 1 plastic drop cloth, at least 2 mil in thickness
• Pair of scissors, suitable for paper and fabric
• Notebook for notetaking
• Pen and pencil
• Apron or old clothing
• iPod and headphones if you like to work to music
• Color wheel (optional - you might like one as a reference if you have one)

• Tools:
• At least one silk screen (10xx or 12 xx) - bring up to three if you are driving and have room. Please put your name on the frame and waterproof the wood by applying 3 layers of water-based polyurethane. When the final layer is dry, please pre-scour the mesh by scrubbing it with a cream cleanser and hot water.
• Thermofax screens (if you have them). Contact Carol a few weeks ahead if you would like her to make some from your images and deliver to you in class.
• Optional: one squeegee such as the 9” Speedball squeegee
• An old credit card or spreader to use as a squeegee with thermofaxes. Spreaders can be found in hardware stores or kitchen shops. My favorite is the Bondo spreader from the automotive department.
• 3-4 brushes: foam or “chip” brushes, in several sizes
• 1 high-density foam roller (these are small diameter, white, and available at home centers)

• Containers for dyeing: (Note: If you are flying, much of this can be picked up at a grocery store after your arrival)
A variety of containers for dyeing will be helpful. I suggest
• Ziploc leftover containers in the 5 cup size with lids
• 1 box Ziploc Freezer bags, 1 gallon size
• If you are driving (not flying) bring: 2 or 3 buckets, any size from one to 3 gallons

MATERIALS FEE PROVIDES:
• Handouts
• Procion MX dyes in pure yellows, reds, and blues, plus additional pure hues and black.
• Auxiliary chemicals such as soda ash, urea, print paste, synthrapol
• Discharge chemicals
• Tools for student use
